Support Local: 5 Must-Visit Metro Shops for Small Business Saturday
It surprises some people to learn that a large part of my work history is in retail. But after spending more than a decade working in stores both big and small, local and national and doing everything from designing spaces, creating window displays and merchandising product, moving to home staging seemed like a pretty natural transition to me. After all, staging a home for sale and merchandising a store really aren't all that different, and have the same goal - to show your product in the best possible light to ensure it appeals to buyers!
I learned so much at every place I worked, but it was my time running my own local boutique that truly made me fall in love with small business! I understand firsthand how much heart and soul local retailers pour into their shops. It is incredibly difficult to compete with big box stores and online retailers. Our local stores are vital to vibrant communities, and every person who opens a small shop is taking a huge leap of faith. They do it because they love our community, are passionate about their products, and truly believe that those connections that are only made face to face matter.
So, as we head into the busiest shopping season of the year, I wanted to spread a little holiday cheer by sharing some of my current favorite local retailers.
Des Moines Mercantile
Step into Des Moines Mercantile, located in Highland Park, and you are instantly transported back in time. A time when the local general store had everything you needed (and maybe even a couple of things you wanted!). A time when functional items were also beautiful, and the quality meant you enjoyed them for years to come. The Mercantile stocks wares from lots of local craftspeople and you will definitely find the perfect thing that you didn't even know you were looking for! I personally love their always amazing selection of books. I highly recommend an in-store browse but you can also shop their website. Don't forget to check out their "events" section for special pop-ups and other can't miss activities.

While you're in the Highland Park neighborhood make sure you stop into The Collective, a unique store that encourages you to consume less. Whether you are just starting a journey into sustainable living or looking for new ways to love our planet The Collective can help. Not sure where to begin? There is another Jamie (the owner) there who can answer all of your questions! She is also family (we share a last name) so together we have been confusing the metro area since 2000. She is ABSOLUTELY the Jamie you want for information about sustainable living, recyclable items and bulk products (definitely check out their "bring your own container" bulk station). The Collective is open Tues-Sun and can be shopped anytime on their website.

As local retail dwindles across the country the one exception has been locally owned bookstores, who have seen growth in every state in the last few years. The metro has so many local booksellers to visit (I shop and love them all!) but for this list I decided to recommend the OG - Beaverdale Books has been providing all of us with bestsellers, books by local authors, events and their amazing expertise since 2006. There is not a single person on your holiday shopping list that couldn't use a book - and if you're not sure which one you're looking for, the staff at Beaverdale Books can make the perfect recommendation. Sign up for their newsletter to ensure you never miss any of their special events.
If you're outdoorsy -or just want to look the part- Active Endeavors is a must-stop! Since 1993 Active Endeavors has focused on quality brands and knowledgeable staff to create a comfortable shopping experience. I personally love their inclusive sizing and generous inventory - I've never had an "oh shoot, we're out of your size" experience here! Active Endeavors has a rewards program for shoppers and is offering 20% off all in-store purchases this weekend.
Active Endeavors, 4520 University Ave, West Des Moines
I don't think a local shopping spree is complete until you've been to Bings! Located in the Valley Junction area, Bing's is fun personified. Chock full of great gifts everywhere you turn, it's the kind of place where you're constantly picking up items to show to your best friend because, "this is SO YOU". Stuff for kids, stuff for teachers, stuff for your aunt, stuff for you - if you can't find at least one great gift at Bing's you should probably take another lap around the store because it's in there I promise! Bings will be celebrating Small Business Saturday with a giveaway - the first 50 customers to spend $50 or more will receive a free pair of socks!
